Mobile food pantry marks first anniversary

Nov. 7, 2015 — Since its founding in the fall of 2014, the UC Irvine Mobile Food Pantry has helped more than 11,553 individuals and 2,429 Santa Ana-area families.

UC Irvine Health Policy Research Institute researchers Herlinda Guzman and Karla Garcia, under the guidance of John Billimek, PhD, co-founded and co-coordinated the UC Irvine Mobile Food Pantry in collaboration with the Second Harvest Food Bank of Orange County.

The pantry is open from 9 to 11 a.m. on the first Saturday of each month at the UC Irvine Health Family Health Center—Santa Ana at 800 N. Main Street, Santa Ana. Volunteers distribute 55 lbs. of food to each household. More than 60 percent of the food is fresh produce.

The Mobile Food Pantry program is made possible with the support of UC Irvine's Dr. David Kilgore and the Samueli Foundation.
